"I am a New York photographer who specializes in portrait, event, and family photography. I am also a photo educator and certified tour guide who runs frequent photo tours and street photography workshops around New York City. Both Brooklyn and Manhattan based. For my portraits, head-shots, and event photography, I work with all types of businesses and people. I shoot large, elaborate events and small intimate affairs. 26 Feb, 2024NYC can be intimidating to navigate if you’ve never been. Hiring James to tour NYC, while sharing his street photography techniques and favorite spots, was priceless. James helped me fall in love with the city and helped build confidence in navigating around NYC, and also in my own street photography journey. I walked away a better photographer and with many great images. I will schedule another tour with James soon.

19 Jan, 2020New York City is an exciting place to photograph and what better way to see the city than with a (local) professional photographer. During a May 2019 trip to New York City, my wife and I participated in a half-day James Maher ‘Street Photography Workshop’. In a word, it was simply a wonderfully rewarding experience on so many levels. In addition to being an accomplished street photographer, local historian, engaging tour guide and a patient instructor, James is above all, a down-to-earth unpretentious host who is eager to share his city with visiting photographers. For the duration of the walking tour, James was able to showcase unique aspects of the city that we likely would not have seen on our own. With his extensive local knowledge, we moved seamlessly from one unique area to another while we photographed non-stop. As a result of his instruction, I feel as though my street photography technique improved dramatically in a very short period of time because James challenged me to move out of my comfort zone. If you're a photographer travelling to NYC and would like to meet up with a well known local, please consider contacting James and booking a tour -- you will not be disappointed. In terms of equipment, I used a 24-105mm zoom and found it worked well in all situations. Here is a sample of the images I created during the workshop.

15 Oct, 2022I booked a 3 hour long custom street photography tour of lower Manhattan with James in October, 2022. I chose this tour in order to get acquainted with photographing in an area of the city that I never really got to know when I lived in New York City several decades ago. After I paid a deposit to book this tour, I received an email from James that contained three photography-related pdf attachments. They were very impressive and really added value to what I paid for the tour. The tour began on time and was conducted in a professional manner. I found James to be personable and easy going and I enjoyed our time together. James took the time to get a sense of my photography "level" as well as my goals for the tour. It seems clear to me that James is capable of providing a worthwhile tour experience to photographers of all levels. As a result of our photo walk, I came away with a good number of photographs that are personally satisfying to me. No regrets. It was a good day.

15 Feb, 2020Brilliant Street Photography Tour with James Maher I had the great pleasure of going on a 3-hour one-to-one photo tour in Lower Manhattan with professional photographer James Maher. It was the first day of my first visit to New York City and with the sun shining and James' encouragement, enthusiasm and easy manner the experience was brilliant. We started the walking tour in Soho, on to Chinatown, walking the Manhattan Bridge and then the Lower East Side; most of the locations I would not have seen as a tourist. Throughout the tour James gave me plenty of advice on shot-taking and his knowledge of the locations and their history was exceptional bringing to life the places visited. If you would like to participate in a thoroughly educational and enjoyable 'street photography' walking tour then James is your man. You will improve your street photography skills with him.

James is super kind with a perfect understanding what a great picture is! He truly slayed it for us! Capturing the beauty of Carnegie Hall while still focusing on the individual as well as truly amazing us with great group shots indoor and outdoor! We will use him again for sure!
