About the Business

The History of The Mount Sinai Hospital
On January 15, 1852, nine men representing a variety of Jewish charities agreed on a vision for free medical care for indigent Jews in New York City. In 1855, that vision came to fruition with the establishment of the 45-bed Jews' Hospital in New York in what was then a rural neighborhood on West 28th Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues.

Although the hospital was a sectarian institution, the Jews' Hospital accepted emergency patients of any religious affiliation. In its first years of operation, the majority of patients were foreign born. As the Jews' Hospital was a charitable enterprise, its directors relied on the gifts of friends and members, as well as later payments from the government, to provide enough to subsidize care.

During the Civil War, the hospital expanded to accommodate Union soldiers. After this, to reflect its broadened mission and to ensure its eligibility for state and city support, the Jews' Hospital formally abandoned its sectarian charter in 1866 and was renamed The Mount Sinai Hospital. In 1872, it moved to a new 120-bed facility on Lexington Avenue, between 66th and 67th Streets, nearly tripling its original capacity.

I always had a great experience from Mt. Sinai (in the ER Department). However I had surgery in the GP-2 at 1468 Madison, and the aftercare was not well. They also do not give enough information on the plan beforehand for you to know what to expect. So in periOperative care department/area, I got out at 4:20 PM on November 3rd. I was trying to close the curtain, but barely had the energy to walk or get up. The small drop-down table on the chair flipped down, and the 4 ounce apple juice fell on the floor. The male, older nurse got angry and irate. Then told me I need leave. He actually had the audacity to later come and pick a fight (high tone and quick words) with me (very poor bedside manner); he could have just easily said ‘sorry there was a misunderstanding.’ I told him we were probably having a cultural difference, and I told him he was being unprofessional. He kept trying to argue with me, but I asked him to stop. I wanted to get out of there so fast, I didn’t brush my teeth and put my used robe, sheets, and cover in the soiled laundry hamper (I didn’t want anybody complaining about any of my mess). I haven’t eaten since yesterday, but my appetite is gone for today (that was enough argument to last me for the week). The other fifty nurses were kind and nice.

The Mount Sinai Hospital has seen me through some of the most challenging times in my life, and for that, I am deeply grateful. I’ve spent numerous nights in this hospital, and my longest stay was two weeks. Throughout all my visits, the one thing that has remained consistent is the incredible care and compassion shown by the entire staff—nurses, doctors, and everyone involved. The nurses at Mount Sinai are nothing short of amazing. They have always treated me like family, attending to my needs with genuine care and without a hint of complaint. Their dedication to their patients is evident in everything they do, from the smallest tasks to the most critical care. It’s clear that their number one goal is to ensure that you walk out of the hospital feeling healthy and 100%. Knowing that you have people who care for you like family during such difficult times is a comfort that cannot be overstated. The doctors are equally remarkable, providing expert medical care with a level of professionalism and kindness that makes all the difference. They take the time to explain everything, ensuring that you feel informed and supported throughout your treatment. So, yes, I’m writing this five-star review to say thank you to The Mount Sinai Hospital. Thank you for being there when I needed it most, for treating me with respect and compassion, and for helping me get back to feeling like myself again. I can’t recommend this hospital enough to anyone in need of medical care. You’re in the best hands possible at Mount Sinai.

Yesterday, On my way to work I experienced a hypertension crisis ( high blood pressure 180/120) Unfortunately, this isn't the first time for me experiencing an Hypertension crisis. I'm pretty clear on the protocols on how a hypertension crisis is handled in the ER, I was shocked on how Mount Sinai was Incompetent. Usually hospitals will put you on Meds to lower the blood pressure about 20%, Not at Sinai. They completely ignored me for 5 hours, not monitoring , my heart rate ( which was high at that time 130bpm according to my Iwatch) or blood pressure. They pretty much stuck me in a utility closest with no monitoring at all. After hours of waiting I finally got sick of their incompetence, called my regular doctor in Brooklyn, she told me to come in to her office. I do want to add I live deep in Brooklyn about 12 miles away from Sinai. Originally I wanted to go back to Brooklyn, but being in the subway or being stuck in traffic when it's over 100 degrees, having the shakes, nausea and a headache didn't sound a great idea at the time of my HTC. I Thought Sinai could handle it, but nope I was wrong ! I ended up going to the doctors desk telling them I was done there.I ended up taking the journey back to Brooklyn feeling like crap, it was completely uncomfortable experience to travel back to Brooklyn feeling the way I did, but not being treated for 5 hours at a hospital was also very uncomfortable experience. I ended up at my regular doctors in Brooklyn, they gave me the IV to help lower my blood pressure to a safe level. It only took my Brooklyn Doctor about an 1hr 1/2 to get my blood pressure to a safe level. I told my doctor about my experience at Sinai and she was baffled by what I had experienced. My advice if you have a Choice to go to another ER, Go to another ER!! Sinai was highly disappointing and they clearly put me at risk.

Staff is nice and all… but you’re left to be ignored most of the time. I’d see someone for 2-5 minutes and then be left for another 1-2 hours. I went in at 5 for a CT scan and I’m still here at 12:30 with no scan In sight. If you’re in any extreme pain just don’t come here… you will be left to your own devices all night. I could barley find a nurse for 30+ minutes at midnight to ask to be discharged early because I was just wasting time here. I almost ran out with my IV needle still in my arm. Somehow the hospital is always full but they could’ve emptied me out hours ago. Never got my CT scan after being there last 12:45 I just begged to go home to three different nurses Honestly can say I will not come back… sorry

I can't say enough good things about my experience at Mount Sinai. I underwent an EP Study and I would like to say the staff are so unbelievably friendly and happy to have a conversation to keep your mind at ease as long as there aren't other things to do. It's really nice to have a team that supports your recovery and people who care about your health. Friendly nurses and very experienced staff.
