About the Business

The story of Din Tai Fung dates back to 1958 when it was originally founded as a cooking oil retail shop in Taipei, Taiwan by Bing-Yi Yang and his wife, Pen-Mei Lai.

In 1972, the couple dedicated half of their shop to making and selling Xiao Long Bao. The Xiao Long Bao became so popular that Mr. Yang phased out the oil business, turning Din Tai Fung into the full-fledged restaurant it is today. Since its founding, Din Tai Fung has become synonymous with quality, consistency, and warm hospitality. With a menu boasting far more than just Xiao Long Bao, the brand has won many accolades, including the coveted Michelin Star five times at its Hong Kong branch, and has introduced a taste of authentic Taiwanese cuisine to 13 countries, including the United States, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, Europe, and Thailand.

Today, Din Tai Fung continues to be family-owned and passed down through generations, staying true to its heritage and timeless values.

There's not much to say that hasn't been said already. The food was actually good, again not amazing. We tried 10 dishes and 50 dumplings total for 4 people and it was a good amount of food. Our favorites unanimously were the crab pork soup dumplings. We did try the truffle soup dumpling and I found that could've been more flavorful. The chocolate dumpling was good, but the black sesame seed dumplings were better. Don't forget to ask for the salted cream for the dessert dumplings. We did order noodles which were very fresh, but lacked flavor for me. I will say the dumpling skins were very impressive as not a single one broke when picking them up from the steamers and they all came out perfectly. The ambiance was really nice and the service was very pleasant. I do appreciate that they don't overwhelm your table with food and it's brought out a couple at a time. It's honestly crazy how difficult it was to get a reservation at the beginning which enhanced the hype, but was only okay. And the price being over $50pp is crazy for dim sum (iykyk) and having tried this in Asia. Overall it was good, not sure it lived up to the hype and cost.

Situated in the heart of the vibrant theater district, this Taiwanese restaurant has captured international attention, bringing a taste of Taipei to the bustling streets of New York City. The atmosphere is lively and festive, with a spacious dining area that is consistently bustling with activity, making it a popular destination for both locals and visitors. As someone from Taipei who has frequented the original Din Tai Fung, I found the NYC branch’s offerings to fall short of the high standards set by its Taiwanese counterpart. The cold appetizer was a standout, delivering a refreshing and well-executed start to the meal. However, the soup dumplings, a signature item, lacked the piping-hot temperature and nuanced flavor profile that define the originals. Similarly, the chicken soup, while expertly cooked and well-seasoned, missed a certain depth and texture that would elevate it further. Despite these differences, the restaurant’s prime location, attentive service, and consistently good-quality cooking ensure that it remains a delightful dining experience. It’s a commendable effort to bring an iconic taste of Taiwan to New York, even if it doesn’t entirely capture the essence of its origins.

I've tried a lot of dumplings over the years and Din Tai Fung does them very well. However, this is NYC, and good dumplings are not rare. What the restaurant excels at, are the various sides that accompany the dumplings. The garlic string beans are easily the best I ever had, but spicy noodles can legibly compete in the very tight noodle market! Add to it a very creative dessert and cocktail selection and I am very glad that this Taiwanese chain chose NYC as their next expansion - well worth the reservation hassle!!

Both service and atmosphere were great, but the food was really average. Crab soup dumplings has no soup, spicy wonton is very sweet and lack of other flavors. The two appetizers tasted ok, but not really outstanding comparing with some other places. I think this is more of an atmosphere and service place, not for foodies.

didn’t hold up to all the hype. The food is fine but uninspired. The atmosphere is nice but feels very corporate. This would be a great place for a corporate event. There are tons of great Chinese food and dumpling shops in New York City. This is not one of them. not bad just not great. The reservation system is an abomination. You cannot make a reservation in person or on the phone you can ONLY use open table. So if you are on the wrong side of open table, forget about it! Might be worth the ownership knowing that when you type in Din Tai Fung when you’re in open table they are not the first dumpling shop that comes up.
