The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School (Harbor School) is a public, maritime high school located on Governors Island in New York City.
Harbor School was founded in 2003 by The Urban Assembly, South Street Seaport Museum and Waterkeeper Alliance as part of Mayor Bloomberg’s effort to replace larger, under-performing schools with smaller, theme-based schools. It was located in the former Bushwick High School for seven years. The school became the first permanent tenant on Governors Island in September 2010.
As the name implies, Harbor School has a special curriculum based upon New York City’s maritime experience. Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are offered in Aquaculture, Marine Biology Research, Marine Affairs, Marine Systems Technology, Ocean Engineering, Professional Diving, Vessel Operations, and Welding & Fabrication. The goal of these programs is for every Harbor School student to graduate with an acceptance letter at college and a technical credential in a marine field.

08 Mar, 2017This is a cool school where they learn to plant oysters that clean the NY Harbor, and scuba dive and row and drive and build boats, too, and study marine biology. It's in a National Park on an island. You take a ferry to go to school.

25 Apr, 2018This is a terrible school the principle jeff has no control of the student .. your childs safety will not and can not be ensure in this school .. your child can be disrespected in front of staff and Nothing will be done ! They fail to follow protocall and report any incident to the DOE. DONT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE ! P.s they got 1 star from me because i cant post without rating but they dont deserve not even half a star

17 Oct, 2012The opportunity that the New York Harbor School presents for students to go into specialized areas of marine, aquatic and environmental studies is phenomenal! As a result of my nephew attending NYHS, he will have several career options upon graduation as well as continuing his education through college. Great school!

29 Sep, 2017My son says teachers don't show interest in the student's learning. I myself had a difficult time a little over a yr ago trying to remove him from a school which he felt disinterested in learning
