In 1920 Bill and Harry Hoffman purchased their first truck and founded Hoffman Motor Transportation to deliver roofing material for installers. The trucking company expanded steadily over the next thirty years by specializing in heavy hauling and rigging, moving oversized objects, such as large machinery, structural steel, storage tanks, industrial boilers, and even diners.
Hoffman acquired its first crane in the early ’40s, and this led to a dramatic new direction for the company; so much so that in 1949, Hoffman Rigging & Crane Service, Inc. was established as a complement to the transportation business. This side of the business grew quickly, eclipsing the transportation side and growing into a crane rental business that included a fleet of 75 cranes —crawler and truck mounted, lattice boom and hydraulic—with lifting capacities ranging from 15 to 300 tons.
During the ’60s and ’70s, Hoffman focused and became heavily involved in rigging services needed for constructing nuclear power plants. At the same time, the Company was one of the pioneers in freight containerization – our fleet of 10 P&H 300t truck cranes loaded every container coming or going from NY harbor until the advent of the permanent dockside gantry crane.
As the nuclear power industry faded and the container loading business wound down, in 1978 Hoffman purchased an equipment distributor in Piscataway, NJ and moved headquarters there. From this base, Hoffman not only sold equipment into NY and NJ, but also found opportunities to supply US built equipment around the world, successfully supplying huge jobs in Russia, Iran, Colombia, Venezuela and Honduras to name just a few.

24 May, 2022We have used Hoffman Equipment service dept. on Zerega ave Bronx for many years. Pat Stroh the service manager understands how costly down time is in the paving business and he works diligently to get you up and running as fast as possible. There have been a few Sundays that i have contacted him and he always responded. His efforts and responsiveness is greatly appreciated . The lead Tech Chris Wilm is absolutely one of the best Tech's in the industry. He accurately diagnoses the issue and gets you repaired and back to work as fast as possible. We highly recommend Hoffman Equipment @ Zerega ave Bronx. Its a pleasure working with Pat and Chris.

30 Jun, 2021We have a large fleet of JCB equipment scattered through the US. And because of that, we have had the pleasure of working with JCB dealers all over. With that being said, and I cannot emphasize this enough - avoid this Hoffman location at all costs. Incompetent and dishonest would almost be too kind when describing them. After several service calls, wrong diagnoses, and wrong parts, they still wanted to charge us over $10,000 for labor and parts that did not fix our issues. If you are stuck using them, make sure to go through their service reports and invoices thoroughly because their service manager (Anthony Nalewajko) will try to charge you for irrelevant parts that did not work, as well as services not performed by their techs. If you are trying to solve any warranty issues through them, you will need to follow up with JCB on your own to make sure they actually file the claim. In our experience, we confirmed with JCB that Hoffman never even tried to submit a warranty claim. These guys are by far the most boldly dishonest (and incompetent) dealer that we've dealt with to date - avoid at all costs!
