Emma Lazarus High school offers a unique program for students who are English language learners. Our programs are designed to support diverse, older students learning English as they complete their high school studies, while also preparing them to enter institutions of higher learning. Technology is infused into every aspect of the classroom: students and teachers have personal laptops, and we use equipment such as iPads, video cameras, audio recorders, and professional software on a daily basis. We are very excited to announce that Emma Lazarus High School has been named the

13 Aug, 2020Pro:) - It keeps getting better and better They offer SAT prep They are organizing more and more outings - Broadway shows -Liberty Island Trip -Community services They provide students tutoring of all subjects -especially English, they provide you all sorts of help to improve your pronunciation, writing, grammar, and public speaking skills. - Very friendly and diverse community -Multicultural festival, talent show are highlights of the school Things that they need to kick it up a notch;/ - Home works are challenging but useful for college later - There are rarely any club activities in the school - More staff needed for counseling seniors that are graduating - Limited space and facilities like science lab My advice as an Alumni - Immerse into the environment and improve English - try to learn some basics about another language from others while you are in the school - Talk with teachers, they are your best partners to improve your English and your best tour and city guide. - Great soccer and basketball teams The school is a good place because it is a collective effort, which means everyone plays their part even though it is insignificant. Over the past 2 years, I have noticed the improved qualities and services provided by the school but still, they couldn't fully satisfy your high school life if you don't take the lead. BE the one who helps set up a club, be the one who encourages others to learn, be the one who says something good. It's not always about being the first one but it's about the mindset. Imagine seeing smiles from others that really come deep down inside them because you have helped them, and they helped others and the spirit is passed on.

26 Jan, 2020I moved to the USA in August 2017, and the first thing I started to do when I came here was looking for the right school. So, one of my grandma's friends told me about Emma, and here I am. It’s December 2019; I am finishing my senior year and looking forward to attending college. This school has helped me develop my skills and achieve my dreams. The teachers have supported me in any way possible. Mr Tarallo and Ms Diner, ELA and Math educators, are especially amazing. The students are being taught with a high-quality curriculum. Should they not comprehend something or make a mistake in their assignments or homework, the teachers would always re-explain the topic and offer to tutor. What is also great about ELHS is that the DOE covers everything the school does and organises. The pupils possess laptops for educational purposes while spending their day in classes; they also receive free lunch and go on different trips for FREE! The best trip your child can ever have if he or she attends Emma, is the college trip, for, in my opinion, it has a fascinating program. When I went on that trip, we had an excursion to four colleges located in Upstate, NY. The trip helped me understand why it is crucial to obtain a college degree. The administration of the school is full of qualified people who have worked in education for years. Dr Joel Heckethorn, the new principal of the school, who had worked as an assistant principal before he got a new position, has changed the school tremendously. He personally greets students outside of the school every morning. Besides that, he has appointments with 10-15 pupils, where they talk about how they can improve Emma. So, in general, the administration cares about their students, which is an essential factor when choosing a school to attend. Hence, if you think whether or not your child(ren) should be enrolled at our school, he/she/they definitely should! Why? Because EMMA LAZARUS HIGH SCHOOL is the best public school in NYC, where the faculty and the students are one big family!

29 Jun, 2021Would recommend -100 out of 10. The baddest school in the city. Shame on school administration and counseling. Don’t wanna mention any name cause I don’t learned to decry someone. I wish I would have known about their curriculum and management in the beginning of my school years. It was a nightmare of being at this school. Nevertheless, don’t try to pretend the characteristics that you don’t bear🥸

08 Aug, 2016Best school for new immigrants and ESL students. Small classes, student teacher interaction, individualized attention, career prep (internships, volunteer) , rigor of classes (college Now, AP). Supportive staff and faculty: an environment that ensures the success of every student.
